Mark Nelson is a leading voice in international media development and one of the most experienced practitioners working at the intersection of journalism, democracy support, and global media policy.

He served as Senior Director at the National Endowment for Democracy and led the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA) for over a decade, helping shape the global agenda on media viability, ownership transparency, and the structural conditions necessary for independent journalism.

Nelson was a European diplomatic correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, based in Brussels, Berlin, and Paris.

He covered the negotiations leading to the Maastricht Treaty, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the war in Bosnia.

While on leave from The Wall Street Journal, he also served as Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, focusing on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
